Acupuncture for Endometriosis
Acupuncture can be a valuable complementary therapy for managing endometriosis, addressing both the physical and emotional challenges of the condition.
🔹 Physical Symptom Relief
♦ Reduction in Pelvic Pain
Acupuncture may reduce both chronic and cyclical pelvic pain by calming nerve responses and decreasing inflammation.
♦ Relief from Menstrual Cramps
Many patients experience a significant reduction in the severity of cramping during their periods.
♦ Decreased Pain During Intercourse
Acupuncture improves pelvic blood flow and relaxes surrounding musculature, which may help reduce pain during intercourse (dyspareunia).
🔹 Inflammation and Digestive Support
♦ Anti-inflammatory Effects
Acupuncture downregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines and upregulates anti-inflammatory pathways. This helps reduce both:
-
Local tissue inflammation in the pelvis
-
Systemic inflammation that may worsen symptoms
♦ Digestive Symptom Relief
Many individuals with endometriosis report bloating, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea—especially around menstruation. Acupuncture supports gut motility and can soothe abdominal discomfort.
🔹 Emotional and Hormonal Balance
♦ Stress and Mood Regulation
Acupuncture regulates the nervous system and HPO axis, helping to ease:
-
Stress
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
These emotional symptoms often accompany endometriosis and infertility.
🔹 Reproductive and Fertility Support
As a reproductive acupuncturist, I have advanced training in evaluating which patients may benefit from interventions within my scope of practice to support fertility.
Endometriosis may contribute to:
-
Difficulty conceiving
-
Failed IVF cycles
Acupuncture may support natural conception or improve IVF outcomes through cycle regulation, improved pelvic circulation, and hormonal support.
🔹 Surgery Preparation and Recovery
Most importantly, acupuncture is a powerful tool for both pre- and post-operative care.
I work with patients to:
-
Prepare the body for excision surgery
-
Support faster recovery and reduce complications like:
♦ Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV)
♦ Inflammation
♦ Pain
🔹 Common Bladder-Related Issues with Endometriosis
-
Urinary Frequency
-
Feeling the need to urinate often, even when the bladder isn’t full.
-
-
Urinary Urgency
-
A sudden, intense need to urinate, sometimes with difficulty making it to the bathroom in time.
-
-
Painful Urination (Dysuria)
-
Burning or cramping during urination, especially around the time of menstruation.
-
-
Bladder Pressure or Fullness
-
A sensation of bladder fullness or pressure, even if there’s little urine.
-
-
Interstitial Cystitis–Like Symptoms
-
Some patients are misdiagnosed with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome, because symptoms can mimic those of endometriosis involving the bladder wall or pelvic nerves.
-
-
Nocturia
-
Waking up at night multiple times to urinate.
-
🔹 Why Does It Happen?
-
Bladder Endometriosis: Endometrial tissue implants on or in the bladder wall.
-
Anterior Cul-de-Sac Involvement: Lesions between the uterus and bladder can irritate both organs.
-
Nerve Involvement: Pelvic nerve inflammation can lead to referred bladder symptoms.
-
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Chronic pain can lead to muscle tightness and spasms affecting urination.
-
Co-existing Conditions: Like IC, UTIs, or pelvic congestion syndrome.
🔹 Acupuncture for Bladder Symptoms in Endometriosis
Acupuncture can help by:
-
Reducing pelvic inflammation and pain.
-
Relaxing the pelvic floor.
-
Regulating bladder nerve signals.
-
Easing urgency, frequency, and discomfort.
-
Supporting emotional regulation when symptoms lead to stress or anxiety.

🔹 Patient Testimonials- Acupuncture Endometriosis Newport Beach
“I had the worst pain due to my endometriosis, even though I had surgery. I wish I had acupuncture before wasting my time on ineffective therapies. Dr. Mehvar really held space for me when I was a mess. The pain really altered my mood, I was miserable. and miserable to be around. My marriage was suffering, I couldn’t be intimate with my husband due to the pain. After a few weeks of acupuncture, the constant misery dissipated. It was really a miracle. Imagine years of suffering-physically and emotionally could have been avoided if I had been sent to an acupuncturist earlier. I really cannot thank Dr. Mehvar enough.”
“I was referred to Shabnam for pelvic pain due to endometriosis by my MD. Shabnam was comforting, soft spoken and put me at ease. She spent an hour listening and asking questions. She explained electro-acupuncture would be a better option for my severe pain. Prior to acupuncture I had nerve blocks and physical therapy.
Acupuncture helped not only with the physical pain but also with the emotional exhaustion I didn’t even realize I was carrying. It gave me a sense of calm I hadn’t felt in a long time. Within 3 weeks of twice a week acupuncture my pain substantially decreased. I go in periodically now when my pain increases. I truly recommend this for anyone with endo or physical discomfort.”
“I had 2 failed embryo transfers; I had read about acupuncture and asked my IVF doctor about acupuncture. Shabnam worked part-time at the IVF center, I saw her at her office mostly since it worked best with my schedule. She explained that due to my endo, the inflammation could interfere with the implantation of my perfect embryo. She gave me treatment plan to prepare for the next embryo transfer. It worked! I got pregnant.
I now have two children, and for both embryo transfers I saw Shabnam for acupuncture before the transfer. I think everyone with endo should have acupuncture before their embryo transfer to increase their chance of pregnancy. The acupuncture did not hurt, it was actually relaxing, and I preferred having acupuncture at Shabnam’s office than at the IVF center (I had acupuncture on the day of both transfers at the IVF center). It’s not as relaxing in the IVF center.”
